What is Coaching Super-Vision?
While the term is borrowed from the fields of psychotherapy and education, the concept of “supervision” takes on a different dimension in the field of professional coaching. In the coaching world, the emphasis is on reflective dialogue rather than formal professional oversight. Which is why many coach supervisors spell it “Super-Vision” – highlighting the co-creation among coaches-as-peers of a powerful partnership that lets us explore and unpack layers of insight into our client cases, our patterns of thought and behavior, our coaching practices, and the systems we all operate within.

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching supervision as “a dynamic and reflective process of collaboration, guidance, and support through which coaches develop their personal, professional, and ethical capacity and maturity. Understanding the symbiotic relationship between coaching supervision and mentor coaching is key: while mentor coaching hones a coach’s skills, coaching supervision goes deeper, focusing on a coach’s self-awareness, impact, and how they navigate broader systems—ultimately, both aspects are inseparable and essential for a coach’s holistic development.”
The European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) defines supervision as “a safe space for reflective dialogue with a practicing supervisor, supporting the supervisee’s practice, development and well-being.”
