coaching super-vision

What is Coaching Super-Vision?

While the term is borrowed from the fields of psychotherapy and education, the concept of “supervision” takes on a different dimension in the field of professional coaching. In the coaching world, the emphasis is on reflective dialogue rather than formal professional oversight. Which is why many coach supervisors spell it “Super-Vision” – highlighting the co-creation among coaches-as-peers of a powerful partnership that lets us explore and unpack layers of insight into our client cases, our patterns of thought and behavior, our coaching practices, and the systems we all operate within.

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching supervision as “a dynamic and reflective process of collaboration, guidance, and support through which coaches develop their personal, professional, and ethical capacity and maturity. Understanding the symbiotic relationship between coaching supervision and mentor coaching is key: while mentor coaching hones a coach’s skills, coaching supervision goes deeper, focusing on a coach’s self-awareness, impact, and how they navigate broader systems—ultimately, both aspects are inseparable and essential for a coach’s holistic development.”

The European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) defines supervision as “a safe space for reflective dialogue with a practicing supervisor, supporting the supervisee’s practice, development and well-being.”

Judy Wolf – Approach to Super-Vision

As a certified coach supervisor, I partner with professional coaches to co-create a self-reflective space where you can…

  • Unpack and learn from client cases
  • Identify patterns and growth opportunities for yourself and your clients
  • Wrestle with and find clarity around ethical issues and gray areas
  • Hone in on skills to more consciously improve
  • Recharge and nourish yourself as a human being in order to show up as your whole and fully present self in sessions (and in the world)

My supervision style combines conversational, emotional, social, and somatic intelligence, as well as a background in mindfulness, yoga, neuroscience, and mediation. I’m a member of the Americas Coaching Supervision Network, Global Supervision Network, and Coaching Ethics Forum. I’m a graduate of the highly regarded Goldvarg Consulting Coaching Supervision and Renewal Associates Systemic Team Coaching Supervision training programs. I’m also an Advanced Certified Mentor Coach trained by Fran Fisher. I regularly participate in 1:1 and group supervision and mentoring for my own individual and team coaching practice, as well as supervision of supervision.

I offer both 1:1 supervision and group supervision formats for coaches who work with individuals, groups, and teams. As an ACTC and an ESIA, I meet the criteria for team coaches seeking qualified team coaching supervision for their ICF ACTC credential application.

I’m happy to provide supervision for you as an individual or for a group of peers you want to put together, or you can contact me to put you on my list of folks to alert of upcoming group supervision offerings. You can also connect with me on LinkedIn to learn about upcoming supervision webinars, demos or offerings. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you’d like to set up a discovery call to learn more.

How Can Supervision Support You as a Coach?

Coaching supervision is typically viewed as serving three core functions: Formative/Developmental, Normative/Qualitative, and Restorative/Resourcing.

  • Together we co-create a reflective dialogue space that supports your ongoing development as a coach, including expanded awareness, capacity, and perspectives
  • A space and place to explore the ethical and boundary issues inherent to coaching
  • Coaching can be an isolating profession – super-vision provides a supportive environment for you to connect and attend to your own being, recharge your energy, and work with the emotional aspects of being a coach

What are the Benefits of Coaching Supervision?

Benefits of coaching supervision according to the ICF include:

  • Increased self-awareness
  • Greater confidence
  • Increased objectivity
  • Heightened sense of belonging
  • Reduced feelings of isolation
  • Increased resourcefulness

ICF Credential-holders may submit up to 10 hours of Coaching Supervision (delivering or receiving) as core competency Continuing Coach Education (CCE) units toward their credential renewal.

EMCC Global believes that experienced practitioners require a minimum of four hours of individual supervision per year, evenly distributed across 12 months and that a minimum ratio of practice to supervision for an experienced practitioner should be 35 practice hours to 1 hour of supervision received.

What Clients Have to Say

Dave Sinclair

Working with Judy has been an exceptional experience, both professionally and personally. As a coach supervisor, her expertise in deep listening and her ability to delve deeper into motivations and underlying challenges is remarkable. Her guidance has not only facilitated my growth as a coach by helping me step back to understand my energy I bring into coaching conversations and how this energy impacts the energetic field of coaching space. This of course, also spills out into my life in a generative manner! Judy’s approach fosters an environment where one can truly open up, leading to meaningful insights and progress.

I have had the pleasure of having Judy as my mentor coach and coaching supervisor over the course of a year, and my experience with her has been transformative. I look back on the progress I’ve made since starting my internal coach training program, increasing my self confidence in coaching leaders at all levels and tackling new situations, deepening my own leadership skills which has helped me to empower others, and supporting me in allowing myself grace, which has helped me to be mentally and physically healthier, and am grateful. Judy is smart, intuitive and one of the best coaches I have ever worked with. I highly recommend her services, both as a coach and a supervisor.

I whole-heartedly recommend Judy Wolf as a supervisor. I have worked with her since November 2023 and she has seen me through my latest developmental stage as a coach as I strive to become MCC. We formed an instant connection, trusting her from day one and I felt that she was dedicated to me and my growth. She has helped me to reflect on sessions to find what I need to work on and, more importantly, what I do well. She is masterful at steering me out of beating myself up and helping me to just ‘be’. She also helps me to recharge and show up with my clients as my best self. Overall, she adapts herself to whatever I need when I show up, be it a supervisor, coach or mentor. Thank you Judy.
